Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero arrived on Rota today, one week after Super Typhoon Bavi devastated the Marianas and dealt a direct blow to the island. Rota Mayor Aubry M. Hocog, her staff, and federal partners from FEMA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security welcomed Governor Leon Guerrero upon her arrival at Benjamin T. Manglona International Airport. The governor is scheduled to tour the island today to assess the widespread damage and meet with local officials as recovery efforts continue. MP Rota Correspondent Joy Atalig reports.

Department of Public Safety Commissioner Anthony Macaranas warned that officers will begin issuing traffic citations to motorists who fail to stop at intersections where traffic signals remain inoperable following super typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, saying too many drivers are ignoring temporary stop signs and creating dangerous conditions on Saipan's roads. “I'm going to have my officers start enforcing and giving people traffic citation on that intersection because people are very ignorant right now. They just don't know how to... stop at the intersection.” Macaranas said every intersection with a non-functioning traffic light must be treated as a four-way stop, regardless of whether motorists are traveling on the main road or a side street. “The people now have to be mindful that you have to stop at a four-way intersection to assure that the clearance of the right-of-way... is clear before you enter the roadway. People just have to practice safety.”

Project OLEAI Youth Summer Camp, which focuses on sports, community service and engagement, cultural activities, leadership, and drug prevention education for children ages 6 to 17, is pushing through from Tuesday, July 14, to Friday, July 31, from 7:30 a.m. to noon, despite a delayed start due to Super Typhoon Bavi. Because of the shortened schedule, organizers said all participants will now be combined into one group instead of following the original split schedule. The camp is in partnership with the Office of Rep. Elias Rangamar and the Youth Affairs Office, and is funded through a Partnership for Success (PFS) subgrant. Team Koka and World Central Kitchen are helping Tinian residents recover by providing free ice and water to the community. On July 10, 2026, the two organizations launched a distribution effort, providing each household with one 5-gallon container of water and one bag of ice at no cost. Marianas Press also spoke with Liza Power about how Tinian Ice & Water Bottle Co. has been recovering and serving the community following the impacts of both Typhoon Sinlaku and Typhoon Bavi. The reopening of Rota's damaged seaports has become a central focus of the federal recovery effort following Super Typhoon Bavi, with Federal Emergency Management Agency officials saying restoring maritime access is critical to bringing in the fuel, equipment and construction materials needed to rebuild the island. Keith Jones, FEMA's external affairs officer, said federal officials, including the federal coordinating officer and Gov. David M. Apatang's representatives, toured Rota last July 9 to assess damage, particularly at the ports, and met with Mayor Aubry Hocog to discuss reopening it as quickly as possible. "The ports are in pretty bad shape," Jones said. "As the mayor said, that's the lifeblood of Rota, and we want to get that open as soon as possible." Jones said emergency food and water needs are currently being met through federal airlift operations, a World Central Kitchen field kitchen and the American Red Cross. However, he said restoring maritime access remains essential because many critical supplies cannot be flown into the island. "The food and the water situation is pretty well under control, but it's gaining that access so we can get the larger commodities, the fuel, the resupply, things that can't be delivered by air. And that's pretty much the main focus right now," he said.

The Rota’s Mayor’s Office and various federal partners, visiting non-profits, and local volunteers were at the distribution site at the Benjamin T. Manglona International Airport to pass out valuable typhoon relief supplies. Cots, solar lights, MREs, drinking water, rice, instant noodles, and canned goods were some of what was distributed to Rota residents this morning. The island continues to be supported by many as it recovers from the devastation Super Typhoon Bavi left. MP Rota Correspondent Joy Atalig reports.

Bong Mahusay, a resident of SongSong Village on Rota and a local business owner, shared his story with MP after Super Typhoon Bavi devastated much of his home and business. Mahusay recalled the harrowing moments of rescuing his tenant, who was trapped inside the only part of the structure left standing–a bathroom. The building had only recently been repaired following the damage caused by Super Typhoon Sinlaku in April. Despite suffering catastrophic losses, Mahusay remains determined to move forward, as he continues operating his catering business to provide meals for the volunteers and crews assisting with Rota’s recovery efforts. All while working to earn the income he needs to attempt to rebuild his home and business once again. MP Rota Correspondent Joy Atalig reports.
