Marianas Press presents “Micronesia Moment.” In this new series, we dig into the archives at the Northern Marianas College to share moments from Micronesia’s history.

In our second segment, we bring you a story from 1990. A press release from Volume 1 of “The Senate” publication wrote about how Senator Edward U. Maratita proposed a bill to create a street directory commission for Rota so that there could be door-to-door mail delivery.

According to the press release, such uniform system would see to it, among others, that:

  • each residence and business address in Rota will be assigned identifying number distinct from other such numbers on the same street;
  • each residence and business building erected after the formulation of such plan can also be assigned a distinct number;
  • preference must be given to names which reflect the local culture and heritage in the naming of public buildings and streets;
  • name public buildings and streets only after individuals no longer living who have made significant contributions to their communities; and
  • follow the established practice of street naming and address numbering system in use within the continental United States.
