Angry Penne offers limited takeout as it recovers from Sinlaku damage
Angry Penne has resumed operations on a limited takeout basis from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. while supplies last following the impact of Super Typhoon Sinlaku.
“We have some damages to the restaurant. We all got flooding. The doors are not fully closing. Our exhaust fan up top is gone. Some, all the food is gone to waste,” said Joel Chan, co-owner of Angry Penne.
The past couple of days after Sinlaku, he said all and their staff have been doing is cleaning the Garapan restaurant famous for its Italian cuisine.
“We're just doing deep cleaning and stuff like that. And some cosmetic issues, problems too, as well. But it's not as bad as some other people, so, thank God, we're hanging in there for sure.”
Chan said the restaurant is operating with a reduced menu based on available supplies.
“Limited menu right now is just whatever you can do with the resources we have. But it's, it's still Italian. We try to keep it as Italian as possible. And yeah, that's pretty much it,” he said.
Asked about their limited menu, Chan said it depends on the availability of ingredients.
“It varies every day. It does vary. Like, it depends on what we can get our hands on.”
He added that their farm in Chinatown was also heavily damaged.
“We have a farm up in Chinatown and we, luckily, the day before the typhoon, we saved the next generation of all the plants. But the farm now, currently, is just wiped out clean from the typhoon,” Chan said. “We have the transplant of the old generation. And then we have seedlings that we just planted everything a couple days ago. Some of them are sprouting already. So, they should be… so, we should be back to normal in a few months from the farm.”
Initial estimates put damages beyond $15,000.
“Food waste is, like, easily, like, $2,000. And then everything… infrastructure damage. Exhaust is… that alone is, like, 10 grand… 11 grand,” said Chan.
He urged customers to check social media for updates as communication remains a challenge.
“We are updated on Facebook and Instagram. Yes. And we have three numbers for you guys to call in case we don't have a… sometimes, we have really bad signal. Everybody has bad signal. The whole battery charging thing is also a big problem,” he said.
He added a brief message to customers: “Stay angry.”
