Welcome to MP’s monthly segment, Built By Latte Built.

This segment highlights athletes and individuals training at Latte Built who are chasing their fitness goals and inspiring others along the way.

This month, we feature Robert Mojica—a longtime firefighter and U.S. Army reservist.

He wears many hats as he’s a firefighter, EMT, and the Public Information Officer for the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, and is attached to the Search and Rescue Unit, Hazmat, and Wildland. For the Army, he is the Bravo Team Leader for the 2nd squad, 2nd platoon of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment out of Saipan.

With 10 years as a first responder and 15 years as a reservist, Mojica knows he always has to be physically ready. If he’s not training at the firehouse, he’s working out at Latte Built, where he has been a member since March 2022.

He said he first checked out the gym after seeing a promotion for the fire department to try it for a few months. He ended up staying because he liked that it’s convenient and open 24 hours, which lets him fit in workouts around or during his shifts.

His workouts are built around staying ready for duty. When he’s on shift, he keeps it lighter so he’s not too exhausted if a call comes over the radio. He focuses on exercises that help with his job—squats, deadlifts, and upper body work. With the military, he said there’s a lot of running and movement involved, so he makes sure to keep his endurance up as well.

As a single parent, Mojica said the 24-hour access helps a lot. Sometimes his mom watches his kids so he can get a workout in after work. “I always tell people it’s a good environment, it’s a good workout,” he said.

At Latte, he added, “I’ve been able to improve in lifting, improve my breathing, and run better. I’ve also been doing the StairMaster so that’s been fun, and doing inclines on the treadmill. It’s very convenient because there are a lot of machines you can use here for your workouts.”

He recommends the gym to others, especially for the flexibility it offers. And for him, it’s more than just lifting weights. He said the gym is a place to feel better and be around good people. “If you’re going through a bad time? Gym. Going through a break up? Gym. Wanna be better? Gym.”
