COE Camacho: There is hope that austerity measures could be reduced by end of January 2026
CNMI Commissioner of Education Dr. Lawrence Camacho issued the following memo on December 19, 2025:
"Dear PSS Family,
This is to share another update on the FY 2026 Budget and to offer reassurance as discussions continue at the government level.
Through ongoing and constructive collaboration with our leaders in the Legislature and the Administration, we are encouraged by the direction of recent conversations and remain hopeful for a revised budget that would increase appropriations for the Public School System. Our collaboration around the PSS budget has strengthened, and there is a growing, shared understanding of the importance of supporting our students, employees, and schools.
Based on these continued efforts, I expect that the Legislature will pass a revised budget that increases appropriations for PSS before the end of 2025, and that it will be approved and signed into law by the Administration. If enacted, this would allow PSS to adjust operations thoughtfully and begin easing current austerity measures in a responsible and measured manner. I remain fully committed to acting in alignment with any approved budget changes to lessen the impact on our workforce and school communities.
Timely action on a revised budget would not only help stabilize PSS operations, but would also contribute positively to the well-being of our broader community, which continues to feel the effects of ongoing fiscal challenges.
With this in mind, there is hope that austerity measures could be reduced by the end of January 2026, providing some relief as we move forward together.
Thank you for your continued patience, professionalism, and dedication. Your commitment to our students and schools strengthens our collective voice and reinforces the importance of investing in public education.
Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful and restful holiday season."
