The Northern Marianas National Paddle Sports Federation’s canoes were safely secured ahead of Super Typhoon Sinlaku, avoiding what could have been significant damage as the storm battered the CNMI and reshaped its shorelines.

NMNPSF president Justin Andrew credited the Northern Marianas Sports Association team for their quick response in allowing the canoes—whose home is on the shores of Kilili Beach, to be stored inside the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium before the storm hit.

He specifically thanked NMSA’s Roselyn Monroyo, Janelle Pangilinan, and Nate Guerrero for helping coordinate the effort on short notice.

Initially, the federation planned to just secure the canoes by stacking and lashing them together along the Kilili Beach shoreline on April 11. However, as forecasts worsened by April 13 and the threat of a direct hit became more likely, the group shifted plans and sought safer shelter.

With help from community members and officials, the canoes were quickly relocated to the gym—an effort Andrew said ultimately prevented possible loss. He also shared that they were fortunate the va’a container storage survived the super typhoon.

He then recognized everyone who stepped up during a stressful time. People dropped what they were doing—whether it was securing their homes or taking care of their properties—to help move the canoes. Police officers were also there, helping with traffic control.

Then, when the all clear was given and when they were able to, the canoes were returned to their rightful place at the Kilili Beach after some much needed clean up around the area.

Looking ahead to the rest of the 2026 va’a season, he said NMNPSF will need to consider how the island community is recovering before making a final decision. Still, he believes the season will likely continue.

“After all, outrigger paddling/racing could be a great therapy as part of our recovery. And when we get back out there on the canoes, we invite anyone to just come out and join us,” he said. “Get in touch with any of the clubs if anyone is interested—all clubs can be found on Facebook or Instagram: Saipan Paddling Club, Marianas Pacific Paddlers, and Marianas Outrigger Club.”
