CNMI Educators Represent the Commonwealth at ISTELive 2026

Educators from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) proudly represented the Commonwealth at ISTELive 2026 in Orlando, Florida, one of the world's premier educational technology conferences.
Dr. Riya Nathrani, Instructional Technology Coach for the CNMI Public School System, served as an international conference presenter, leading multiple sessions on artificial intelligence, digital citizenship, gamification, and culturally responsive AI storytelling. Her presentations demonstrated how technology can empower educators, enhance student learning, and preserve and celebrate the cultures, languages, and identities of the Marianas.
Commenting on the experience, Dr. Nathrani said, “Our goal is to prepare students for a rapidly changing world without losing sight of the cultures that make the Marianas unique. Every opportunity to share our work reminds me that educational excellence is not defined by geography, but by the passion and commitment we bring to serving our students. I hope my presentations not only inspire others but also showcase the unique perspectives and creativity that educators from the Marianas bring to the global education community."
Also representing the CNMI was Sherlyn Cruz, a first-grade teacher at Oleai Elementary School. Cruz participated in the ISTE STEAM in Early Education Community of Practice, a year-long international network of educators dedicated to advancing meaningful STEAM learning for young children. During the conference, she collaborated with educators from around the world, participated in professional learning sessions, and helped facilitate the Little Learners, BIG Ideas: STEM and Early Learning Forum, where educators shared innovative practices and ideas for early childhood STEAM education.
Reflecting on the experience, Cruz shared, “Being part of the STEAM in Early Education Community of Practice reminded me that even from a small island, we have meaningful ideas to contribute to the global education community while bringing back new perspectives to benefit our students and fellow educators.”
Throughout the conference, both educators engaged in learning focused on artificial intelligence, educational technology, STEAM, and innovative instructional practices while building connections with educators from across the globe. Their participation reflects the growing leadership of CNMI educators and their commitment to bringing new ideas, meaningful partnerships, and innovative learning opportunities back to students and schools throughout the Commonwealth.
