Following the Marianas Press 2026 Gubernatorial Debate held at the Pacific Islands Club Saipan on August 18, local political figures and community leaders offered their insights on the candidates' performances. Their post-debate analyses converged on three key themes: the urgent need to stabilize the local economy, the importance of executive readiness, and the striking civility displayed among the candidates.

U.S. Congresswoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds noted that the Commonwealth's fragile economy and looming government furloughs remain the overriding concerns for voters.

"I thought it was a great opportunity for all the candidates to present what their thoughts are in terms of moving the economy forward," King-Hinds stated.

A vocal supporter of former Governor Ralph Torres, King-Hinds defended his track record, arguing that the conclusion of his six-year Department of Justice probe allows the CNMI to focus strictly on actionable solutions. Pointing to the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation's recent multi-million-dollar shortfalls, she emphasized the need for seasoned leadership.

"Right now, CUC wants $40 million—where are we going to get $40 million, right? And the answer cannot be solely the federal government," she explained. King-Hinds asserted that Torres holds a distinct advantage: "Ralph has actually been governor before, so he knows how government is supposed to work."

Independent U.S. Congress candidate Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero, a speech and debate coach with three decades of experience, refrained from declaring a winner but offered high praise for the debate's respectful tone.

"It warms my heart to see that even though these three opponents are running against each other, that you see such camaraderie, such respect, such... statesmanship," Deleon Guerrero observed, contrasting the local decorum with the deep polarization often seen in national politics.

Having coached candidate BJ Attao behind the scenes, Deleon Guerrero highlighted Attao’s growth as a communicator and his firm grasp of public policy. He pointed to Attao’s underlying motivations as his strongest moment on the stage.

"When it came down to the why, I felt his why was the most authentic," he said, referencing Attao’s personal stories of family resilience. Deleon Guerrero added that Attao’s pledge to cut his own salary first if elected perfectly encapsulates his commitment to "servant leadership."

Marianas High School Vice Principal Preston Basa praised Dr. Lawrence Camacho’s strategic, forward-thinking approach to governance. Basa emphasized the critical role of community education and the necessity for voters to make informed choices at the ballot box.

According to Basa, Dr. Camacho isn't waiting for election day to begin his work; he is already proactively engaging with government agencies to assess the Commonwealth's current operational status.

"A lot of people don't know that behind the scenes now, he's already doing the work," Basa explained. "He's meeting with a lot of agencies... so that on day one, when he comes in, it's actually work. It's not, 'Okay, now let's figure out what's happening.'"

Basa concluded by highlighting that Dr. Camacho’s platform is rooted in identifying and resolving the structural "root causes" of the CNMI's challenges, rather than merely treating the symptoms.
