MVA prepares search for Taijeron’s replacement

The Marianas Visitors Authority is preparing to launch its search for a permanent managing director to replace Jamika Taijeron, with acting managing Director Judy C. Torres saying the job vacancy announcement could be posted as early as next week.

The status of the vacancy came up near the end of MVA board meeting last Aug. 12 after a board member said members of the public had been asking when the position would be advertised.

“We're ready to share the JVA announcements with the chair. Once he gives us the go green light, we're ready,” Torres said.

The board discussed casting a wider net for Taijeron’s replacement instead of relying solely on local newspapers and social media.

Among the options discussed were advertising through the Pacific Asia Travel Association, or PATA, and other regional and international outlets reaching places such as Asia and Guam.

Asked when the vacancy would be announced, Torres said the posting still had to go through the review process.

“As soon as the draft gets transmitted for our review, for the committee's review, and we'll put it up. So by next week, we should be here,” Torres said.

The board discussed a 30-day posting period as well as keeping the position open until filled. As of Wednesday’s meeting, the job vacancy announcement had not yet been posted.

Torres is serving as acting managing director while MVA searches for Taijeron’s permanent replacement.

The board also approved expanding the scope of MVA’s Spruce-Up Campaign to include typhoon-related restoration and recovery work at visitor sites, tourism-related public areas and MVA-owned or maintained facilities.

The expanded program can cover materials and supplies, debris removal and cleaning, repairs and restoration, equipment rental, contractual services and other necessary expenses intended to restore the safety, appearance, functionality, and visitor readiness of affected sites and facilities.

MVA officials said they are working with the Governor’s Office, Division of Parks & Recreation, and Public Assistance Office on restoration efforts involving destination sites. Among the areas discussed were the Grotto, Paupau Beach, Beach Road, and other northern tourist areas, with safety and lighting among the priorities.
