No injuries reported on Rota as crews begin assessing Bavi damage
No injuries or casualties have been reported on Rota following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Bavi, according to Sen. Donald Manglona, who said emergency crews have begun clearing roads while the island remains without power and running water.
In an Instagram update Monday evening, Manglona acknowledged that many families have been unable to contact loved ones because communications were disrupted after the storm.
"Fortunately, we haven't received any reports of any injuries or casualties. However, our first responders and road crew are still out on the road trying to clear access for our response vehicles to go out and answer any distress calls," he said.
Manglona said the island still has no running water or electricity, noting that power was lost around 10pm Sunday before the eye of the storm passed over Rota Monday morning.
"The eye of the storm did come through at around 8am and lasted, I would say, around an hour or an hour and a half," he said.
As officials continue assessing the extent of the damage, Manglona thanked supporters for their prayers and asked for continued support.
"We just want to thank you all for your prayers. We hope that you guys are also safe and we ask for your continued prayers and thoughts while we assess the extent of the damages caused by Super Typhoon Bavi," he said.
Manglona also offered to check on residents whose relatives have been unable to reach them because of the communications outage.
"If you are unable to reach any of your family members, feel free to message me on Facebook or Instagram and I'll try my best to make my way over to them and check on their well-being," he said.
He added that he would continue providing updates as more information becomes available. "As soon as I get additional information, any new information, I will be sure to try to share that with you."
Meanwhile, from 515 last Sunday, the total of shelterees that sought refuge from Super Typhoon Bavi all throughout the CNMI went down to 504 tonight, June 6.
This, according to the Joint Information Center at the Emergency Operations Center on Capitol Hill.
Broken down, Marianas High School 1 has the most shelterees with 101, followed by Garapan Elementary School with 72, Kagman High School with 69, Koblerville Elementary School with 66, Tinian Elementary School with 53, Marianas High School 2 with 50, Kagman Community Center with 36, Rota Aging Center with 29, and Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Junior/Senior High School with 28.
