Remains of WWII Japanese War Dead Honored Before Return to Japan
It was a solemn day in Marpi on Monday, March 9, as the remains of Japanese World War II victims discovered on the islands of Saipan and Tinian were honored during a small memorial service held in conjunction with a cremation ceremony at the old Banadero Airport.
Leading the recovery and repatriation efforts is the Japan Association for Recovery and Repatriation of War Casualties. For the ceremony, the organization was joined by delegations from the Japan Youth Memorial Association and the International Volunteer University Student Association, along with representatives from the Consular Office of Japan. Local agencies in attendance included the Historic Preservation Office, the NMI Museum, Commonwealth Healthcare Corp., the Indigenous Affairs Office, the Office of the Mayor of Saipan, and the Office of U.S. Delegate Kimerlyn King-Hinds. Community members and residents also attended the ceremony, paying their respects and witnessing the solemn tribute.
Following the cremation, the ashes will be returned to Japan and ultimately to the families of those who perished.
Here’s a look at the moment as Marianas Press’ Chrystal Marino reports.
