Rota community completes 1,000 Fruit Tree Initiative
After announcing the effort in April 2023, Rota Mayor Aubry Hocog and community members gathered yesterday to complete the 1,000 Fruit Trees Initiative.
The mayorās office described it as a āmajor milestone in the islandās efforts to promote sustainability and beautification.ā
The project exceeded its goal, with a total of 1,153 fruit trees planted across Rota in just three years. In the final planting event, 81 fruit trees were planted, including 15 dwarf golden coconuts, 29 malabar chestnuts, 22 pomegranates, 12 Star Fruits, and 3 sugar fruits.
āThe initiative aims to encourage sustainable agriculture and reduce reliance on imported goods by increasing access to fresh, locally grown fruits. These trees will not only provide a sustainable supply of fresh fruits across the island community but also help beautify the island and support a healthier environment for future generations,ā the mayorās office said in a statement.
They added, āMayor Aubry M. Hocog extends her gratitude to all departments, staff, and volunteers who contributed to the projectās success, highlighting their collective efforts to showcase Rotaās commitment to a greener and more self sufficient future. Special shout out to the DLNR - Forestry Division under the leadership of James Manglona, his team and the PCRP team for their assistance. Teamwork to build a better Rota!!ā
