Some federally funded gov’t workers now exempt from austerity measures

Some government employees funded by the federal government are now exempt from austerity measures, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
In a letter obtained by Marianas Press, Division of Coastal Resources Management staff were informed that their agency’s request for exemption from austerity measures was approved. “All staff are cleared to return to regular work schedule starting tomorrow, Thursday, December 11, 2025,” the December 10, 2025, letter stated.
“The governor recognizes that DCRM's work is critical and essential as a regulatory, permitting and enforcement agency in the CNMI. Please continue working diligently towards the completing of federal award tasks and agency goals,” they further explained.
Marianas Press learned that all of DCRM’s 16 staff are fully funded by the federal government.
In his October 30, 2025, directive, CNMI Governor David Apatang included federal programs in the non-standard work week hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. under a reduction in hours.
It’s unclear if all federally funded employees are exempt from the austerity measures. A source familiar with the matter said requests are made and approved on a case-by-case basis.
