CNMI DPS PRESS RELEASE: At approximately 11:37 a.m., DPS received a report of a swimming-related incident at Sugar Dock involving two persons who entered the water in the area of the channel.

Preliminary investigations revealed that at around 9:30 a.m., two swimmers were attempting to locate a pole on the reef when they encountered high tide and strong ocean currents. The current began pulling them toward the channel, prompting them to attempt to swim toward the reef. During the crossing, one of them experienced difficulty and became unresponsive. The other individual attempted to assist and performed rescue efforts before swimming to shore to seek emergency assistance.

Emergency personnel from the Department of Public Safety’s Marine Patrol Section, and the DFEMS Search and Rescue Unit are actively conducting search and rescue operations for the 52 year old male who remains missing.
