CNMI Commissioner of Corrections Announces Resignation

Anthony C. Torres, Commissioner of the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Corrections (NMIDOC), today announced his resignation.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the people of the Commonwealth and to lead the dedicated men and women of NMIDOC,” Torres said. “Together, we have worked to strengthen public safety, improve operations, expand rehabilitation programs, and build greater trust in our correctional system. I am proud of the progress we have made and confident that the department is well-positioned to continue its important work.”
During his tenure, the department advanced key priorities including enhanced security and contraband reduction efforts, the creation of the Manhoben Care Center and Guma’ Diniseha, expansion of rehabilitation and reentry programming, operational improvements to the Adult Correctional Facility, integration of parole functions, staff training and professional development initiatives.
These efforts reflect a continued commitment to both accountability and rehabilitation.
Torres expressed deep gratitude to the late Governor Palacios, Governor Apatang, the Legislature, correctional officers and staff, partner agencies, and the broader community for their support. He also thanked the individuals in the department’s care and their families for the opportunity to contribute to a safer and more effective correctional system.
Torres will transition to the private sector to support emergency management, public safety, and correctional systems across the country in solving complex problems, while continuing his service as Chairman of the Commonwealth Economic Incentive Authority (CEIA). He plans to remain at home and continue to serve in various capacities.
The Commissioner thanked the people of the CNMI for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed his ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth. (PR)
