Death of an inmate: DOC Statement

“Wei, Lian Yong, an ICE detainee housed at the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Corrections (NMIDOC), died in the early morning hours of August 23, 2026.
Staff discovered the individual during routine checks and immediately initiated emergency medical response. The individual was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center (CHCC), where he was pronounced dead. NMIDOC does not release protected health information.
In accordance with established protocols, the Department of Public Safety and appropriate investigative authorities have been notified. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been notified. The matter is under investigation.
The inmate was initially brought in on charges of the following:
Disturbing the Peace
Assault
Assault and Battery
Aggravated Assault and Battery
Assault with a Dangerous Weapon
Immigration Violation
NMIDOC takes the safety and well-being of all individuals in its custody with the utmost seriousness. Following this incident, the Department is reviewing relevant procedures and will implement any necessary corrective actions to strengthen prevention and response measures.
The Department extends its condolences to the family of Mr. Wei.
