The National Weather Service in Guam is expressing increased concern for the Marianas this weekend as weather disturbance 96W develops in the eastern Federated States of Micronesia.

Landon Aydlett said multiple numerical weather models have consistently indicated a system of some intensity moving through the Marianas.

“The larger picture is nearly conclusive: something is developing and likely to head our way, likely this weekend,” he said.

However, the system’s potential track, strength and speed remain uncertain. Aydlett said 96W is still nearly stationary and has been slowly looping northeast of Kosrae over the past few days.

“The finer picture will remain all ‘IFs’ until 96w gets better developed and then starts moving WNW toward our region,” he said.

With about four days remaining, Aydlett said there is still time for changes in the system’s track and intensity.

For now, he urged residents to prepare, stay informed and be ready to take action if necessary.

“Stay safe. Be prepared. And look out for each other in the coming days.”
