213 crashes, 2 fatalities recorded after Sinlaku, Bavi

The Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol has recorded 213 reported traffic crashes from April 13 to the present following super typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, including two fatal crashes, according to DPS statistics.

Meanwhile, most of Saipan's traffic lights have also been restored, with only three intersections still awaiting reconnection by the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.

According to DPS, the reporting period recorded 213 traffic crashes, including 25 crashes at intersections where non-operational traffic signals were functioning as four-way stops. Highway Patrol also made six arrests for driving under the influence during the same period.

The two fatal crashes involved a 75-year-old pedestrian who was struck and killed in front of the former Sunny Side Restaurant in Koblerville last May 11, and a motorcyclist who died following a collision with a truck on Middle Road near CarQuest last July 23.

DPS also reported a non-fatal auto-pedestrian crash in Chinatown last June 2 in which the pedestrian sustained injuries.

Highway Patrol said the increase in crashes also included incidents involving parked vehicles, vehicles leaving the roadway, and collisions with fixed objects.

DPS public information officer Frederick Sato urged motorists to remain cautious, especially at intersections where traffic signals remain inoperative.

"DPS reminds all motorists to remain vigilant and exercise caution while driving, particularly when approaching intersections with non-operational traffic signals. Drivers should always treat these intersections as four-way stops, obey posted traffic laws, avoid impaired driving, and remain attentive to changing road conditions. Safe and responsible driving continues to be the most effective way to reduce crashes and save lives on our roadways."

Meanwhile, Department of Public Works Secretary Ray N. Yumul said nearly all traffic signal systems on Saipan have returned to service following repairs after the twin typhoons.

"So, all traffic lights around Saipan are operating except for the Sadog Tasi, Kagman, and San Vicente traffic lights system."

Yumul said repairs to the three remaining traffic signal systems have already been completed, but they are awaiting CUC to restore electrical connections.

"A work order request had been submitted to CUC to have the meters re-installed and the drop lines reconnected. The three traffic lights system had damages to their respective weather heads and needed repairs which had been completed. Just waiting on CUC action at this time."
