
Cultural icon Lino M. Olopai passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The Pacific leader and advocate was 86 years old.
CNMI Indigenous Affairs Office resident director Luella I. Marciano confirmed the news to Marianas Press tonight.
Marciano issued the following statement to Marianas Press:
āIt is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lino Olopai. A giant among us has left this earth, but his spirit and legacy will forever anchor our Carolinian community. Lino was more than just a man; he was an icon, a pillar of strength, knowledge, and humility. To many of us, he was a revered father, a loving grandfather, a cherished brother, and a mentor whose guidance shaped countless lives, men and women alike. We are deeply saddened by his passing, but we take solace in the immense honor of having shared in his wisdom. His passion for preserving and sharing his vast knowledge of our culture and traditions was unmatched. Every lesson he imparted was a gift, a testament to his dedication to ensuring our heritage endures. Lino Olopai's absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his generous spirit and profound wisdom. We will miss him dearly.ā
