DFS Saipan to Close in April After 40 Years
After more than 40 years, DFS Saipan/DFS Saipan International Airport will close its doors on April 30, 2025.
'This closure is the result of challenging economic conditions, compounded by the departure of luxury brands, which have significantly impacted the storesā appeal and profitability. Despite our best efforts to continue the operations, the circumstances around the current landscape have made it unsustainable to continue. The decision is also part of DFSās broader strategy to streamline our global operations and refocus on key, profitable markets in Asia,' a statement from the company sent to Marianas Press said.
Marianas Press learned that DFS Saipan employs 55 people.
CNMI Department of Labor Secretary told Marianas Press, \āWe will be ready to assist by sending our [Workforce Investment Agency] team as we have for any other business who informs us of their closure 60 days in advance as required by law.'
DFSā marketing office said their priority is to support their staff and continue serving the community until the very last day of operations.
CNMI Governor Arnold Palacios said, \āWhile we acknowledge this closure with a heavy heart, we see it as an opportunity to create new avenues of economic growth. We are committed to working with local and international partners to attract new investments that will not only fill the void left by DFS but also bring innovative and sustainable business ventures and jobs to our islands.'
Palacios added, \āThe departure of DFS underscores the CNMIās need for us to diversify our economy and not solely rely on one industry.'
