Flights canceled as Super Typhoon Bavi nears CNMI

As Typhoon Bavi approaches the Northern Mariana Islands, airlines have begun canceling flights in anticipation of hazardous weather conditions expected over the weekend and early next week.

Commonwealth Ports Authority board chair Bartley Jackson said that several carriers have already adjusted their schedules as part of their storm preparations.

According to Jackson, Jeju Air will maintain normal operations on Sunday, July 5, but has canceled its Monday, July 6 flight. The airline has no scheduled operations on Tuesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 8, which are regular non-operating days.

Jackson also said United Airlines has canceled flights from Sunday through Tuesday. The airline will reassess operations after Tuesday depending on the typhoon’s impact. United is still scheduled to operate its three flights on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Star Marianas Air will suspend flights beginning Saturday through Tuesday, Jackson said.

For Micronesian Air Connection Services, Jackson said flights remain operational on Saturday, while there are no operations on Sunday, but Monday schedule is literally still up in the air and to be announced.

Passengers are advised to monitor their airlines directly for the latest updates, as additional cancellations or schedule changes remain possible depending on the track and intensity of Typhoon Bavi.
