“I understand that this office is not about power. It is about service.”

With those words, newly sworn-in CNMI Superior Court Associate Judge Joey Patrick San Nicolas underscored his commitment to fairness and the rule of law during his oath-taking ceremony last May 8 at Guma’ Hustisia.

San Nicolas, who was administered the oath by Gov. David M. Apatang, described the appointment as among the greatest privileges of my life and said he accepted the responsibility with “full appreciation of the trust” placed in him.

He thanked Apatang for nominating him and the Senate for confirming his appointment, saying he would strive daily to justify their confidence.

San Nicolas also acknowledged the support of his wife, children, siblings, extended family, friends, mentors, and colleagues in the legal profession, saying his accomplishments were built on “the foundation of family.”

He recognized the Judiciary’s employees—including fellow judges, clerks, marshals, probation officers, administrative staff, and maintenance workers—for their behind-the-scenes role in ensuring justice is administered every day.

The new associate judge dedicated the occasion to retired justice Perry Inos, praising his professionalism, humility, and commitment to public service.

San Nicolas likewise paid tribute to Chief Justice Alexander C. Castro, whom he credited for mentoring and guiding him throughout his legal career.

“Your mentorship, your wisdom, your friendship, and your example of integrity and judicial temperament have helped shape me not only as a lawyer, but as a man,” San Nicolas said.

He pledged to uphold the CNMI Constitution and laws of the Commonwealth while treating everyone who enters the courtroom “with dignity, fairness, and respect.”

“It is about fidelity to the Constitution, to the laws of this Commonwealth, and to the fair and impartial administration of justice,” he said.

Earlier in the ceremony, Castro thanked lawmakers for moving swiftly on the confirmation process and said the judiciary was pleased to have its judicial vacancies filled despite the ongoing recovery from Super Typhoon Sinlaku.

A prayer led by Fr. Rey D. Rosal asked for wisdom, compassion, and strength for San Nicolas as he assumes the bench.

Apatang, meanwhile, congratulated San Nicolas and thanked the Senate for expediting the confirmation hearing. He also called on the community to continue working together as the Commonwealth recovers from the storm.
