Each October, communities across the nation observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time to recognize the impact of domestic violence, uplift survivors, and affirm that everyone deserves to live in safety, respect, and hope. The Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence (NMCADSV) invites the community to join a series of events and activities throughout the month that encourage awareness, connection, and collective action.

This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Hope. Restoring Light.”, recognizes that hope can look different for every person. It may be found in being believed, having choices, finding support, or seeing a path forward. Restoring light is not a responsibility for those who have experienced harm to carry alone. It calls on families, service providers, institutions, and the broader CNMI to respond with compassion, accountability, and respect for each person’s experience.

The observance begins with the DVAM Proclamation Signing Ceremony on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe. The ceremony will officially recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in the CNMI and will be livestreamed in partnership with Marianas Press for those unable to attend in person.

The ceremony will also include the presentation of the 2026 Bridge of Light Award (BOLA), honoring an individual whose leadership and compassion have strengthened the CNMI’s efforts to end domestic and sexual violence. The Coalition extends its sincere gratitude to the Tan Siu Lin Foundation for their generous sponsorship, which makes possible the prize awarded to this year’s recipient.

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 9:00 AM, a Day of Prayer will be observed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral. The gathering offers faith communities a moment to come together in prayer and reflection for those affected by domestic violence. A list of participating faith based denominations will be announced on NMCADSV’s social media platforms.

At the heart of the month’s activities, the Day of Unity will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at American Memorial Park. Families can enjoy cultural performances, children’s activities, informational booths, and local food and drink vendors. Designed as a welcoming day for all ages, the event offers space to enjoy one another’s company while connecting with local resources. Free DVAM t-shirts will be available while supplies last.

As October continues, the community is invited to wear purple for the Purple Wave, Walk, & Roll featuring the Men’s Walk Against Domestic Violence on National Purple Thursday, October 22, 2026. Beginning at 4:30 PM at the Oleai Beach North Pavilion, across from the CEDA building, the event will include free poster making and face painting, roadside waving at 5:00 PM, and the Walk & Roll at 5:30 PM. Participants are encouraged to bring handmade signs and join in this visible expression of solidarity.

Free DVAM t-shirts will also be available while supplies last.

The conversation will also continue on the airwaves through weekly DVAM radio shows on KKMP 92.1 FM. Airing every Wednesday at 8:00 AM, the series will feature guest panelists discussing domestic violence and ways the CNMI can stand alongside survivors.

On social media, the #31DaysOfDVAM Social Media Challenge will offer a daily way to take part throughout October. Individuals, families, schools, and workplaces are invited to follow @EndViolenceNMI on Facebook and Instagram to participate in daily prompts for a chance to win amazing prizes.

DVAM will extend across the CNMI, with additional activities for Rota and Tinian currently in development. In collaboration with local partners, the Coalition is preparing opportunities for each island to take part in the month’s observance. Dates, locations, and event details will be shared as plans are finalized.

“When we show up with empathy, share resources, and make room for these conversations, we help remind people that they are not alone,” said Zarinae J. Sapong, NMCADSV Program Manager and 2026 DVAM Planning Committee Chair. “Each of us has a part in helping make the CNMI a place where those affected by domestic violence are met with understanding and connected to support.”
